With the Concrete Art project a series of individual large-scale sculptures produced by seven internationally renowned artists was presented in the public town space of Graz. The one common feature of the works shown here is the fact that they were all made out of concrete. The participating artists – Chris Burden, Anthony Cragg, Magdalena Jetelová, Hans Kupelwieser, Matt Mullican, Haim Steinbach and Manfred Wakolbinger – all employ a very different approach to the material and to public space. They present individual artistically significant positions that are able to stand their ground against an urban space that is literally swamped with stimuli. Concrete Art took place in the context of „Graz 2003 – Cultural Capital of Europe“ as a joint initiative with „Bauwirtschaft Steiermark“ (Styrian Building Industry). Financial support was provided by the Austrian Federal Chancellery – Art Section as well as more than twenty sponsors from the private sector. Werkstatt Kollerschlag was responsible for the concept and realization. The project was curated by Prof. Edelbert Köb, director of the Museum of Modern Art in Vienna. The catalogue published for the exhibition provides information on the production of the individual works.
Mit dem Projekt Concrete Art wird eine Reihe autonomer Großskulpturen von sieben international bedeutenden Künstlern im öffentlichen Stadtraum von Graz präsentiert. Gemeinsam ist den sieben Arbeiten das Material Beton. Die ausführenden Künstler – Chris Burden, Anthony Cragg, Magdalena Jetelová, Hans Kupelwieser, Matt Mullican, Haim Steinbach und Manfred Wakolbinger – gehen sehr unterschiedlich mit dem vorgegebenen Material und mit dem öffentlichen Raum um. Sie stellen individuell bedeutsame, künstlerische Positionen vor, die sich den heutigen reizüberfluteten Stadträumen gegenüber durch Reaktionsfähigkeit behaupten. Concrete Art wurde im Rahmen von Graz 2003 – Kulturhauptstadt Europas in Kooperation mit der Bauwirtschaft Steiermark und mit Hilfe des Bundeskanzleramtes – Sektion Kunst, sowie über zwanzig Sponsoren aus der Privatwirtschaft realisiert. Konzept und Realisation stammen von der Werkstatt Kollerschlag. Kuratiert wurde das Projekt von Prof. Edelbert Köb, Direktor des Museums Moderner Kunst, Wien. Zur Ausstellung erschien ein Katalog, der auch Einblick in die Herstellung der einzelnen Arbeiten gewährt.
The BUWOG (Bauen und Wohnen Gesellschaft mbH – Building and Construction ltd) has made it its principle to ensure a high quality of living. It does not just seek to ensure functionality within houses or apartments but also aims at making a contribution to the culture of living. Here issues related to the quality of architecture and of urban planning as well as of artistic design and the furnishing of residential buildings are addressed. The inhabitants are given the chance to deal with a variety of different forms of expression found in recent artworks.
Die BUWOG (Bauen und Wohnen GmbH) bekennt sich in ihrem Leitbild auch zur Verantwortung für die Qualität des Wohnens und will dabei nicht nur die Funktionalität im Inneren der Wohnhäuser oder der Wohnungen sicherstellen, sondern auch einen Beitrag zur Wohnkultur leisten.
Damit sind neben Fragen der Qualität der Architektur und des Städtebaus auch jene der künstlerischen Gestaltung und Ausstattung von Wohnhausanlagen angesprochen. Die Bewohner erhalten die Möglichkeit, sich mit den verschiedensten Ausdrucksformen aktueller künstlerischer Leistungen auseinander zu setzen.
The Austrian Federal Real Estate Company (BIG) looks back on a long tradition when it comes to integrating art in its construction projects. In this sector it was one of the pioneers and thus served as a model for other private real estate companies. The BIG-ART project was suggested and developed for BIG by Werkstatt Kollerschlag in 2002 as part of an PR initiative with art. It comprises the areas of temporary large banners at BIG-construction sites and permanent art and construction projects in close collaboration with architects and artists. Artists for these projects are selected together with Prof. Edelbert Köb, the director of the Museum of Modern Art in Vienna.
BIG commissions mainly Austrian artists with temporary art displays and buys original works that are transferred to large-format banners and mounted on the dust-collecting nets of the scaffolding erected for renovation work on BIG buildings throughout all of Austria.
